Three-dimensional reconstruction of the craniofacial surface with stereopair images

A simple method is described for adding texture to the relatively smooth surface of the human face by projecting fine textural patterns drawn on transparency. Experiments show that these fine patterns can improve the accuracy of cross-correlation data and thus the accuracy of surface height calculated from such cross correlation. The average percent error of height determination on a face phantom improved from 79% without a projected pattern to 18% with such a pattern, or a 438% improvement.<
