Learning with meaning through marker events

A marker event is an event that is remembered well after the surrounding activity is forgotten. On the basis of interviews with students and faculty, as well as review of the educational literature, the authors have identified certain educational activities which have marker potential. It is argued that, properly used, these events increase the likelihood of a marker occurring for students in a course, thereby increasing the event's significance and serving as an anchor for future recall of the whole course. Twelve educational activities with marker potential are described and their effectiveness as potential marker events is discussed.<
