Efficient resonant frequency-doubling in semiconductor multilayers

We propose efficient frequency doubling in semiconductor multilayers. When the fundamental beam is coupled into the waveguide propagating along the multilayer plane, second-harmonic light emits from the the surface of the multilayer structures, normal to the propagation direction of the fundamental beam. The quasi-phasematching is achieved by growing alternating thin layers in which a single unit consists of two layers possessing different magnitudes of second-order susceptibilities. By properly designing the structures of multilayers, we can convert the spectrum of 0.8-2 /spl mu/m to that of 0.4-1 /spl mu/m using different structures. To reach 72% conversion efficiency for generating blue light based an ZnSe/ZnS multilayers, the input power is estimated to be /spl ap/65 mW.<
