Analytical models for the performance evaluation of banyan networks with shared queueing

Multistage banyan interconnection networks are studied in which the switching elements are provided with a buffer shared among all the inlets and outlets of the element. No internal backpressure protocols are adopted in the network so that packets can be lost at any stage due to buffer overflow. Three analytical models have been developed for the analysis of these networks when loaded by random traffic. These models describe the traffic source loading each switching element stage by stage as either a completely random Bernoulli source, or as a two- or three-state source, thus with an increasing degree of complexity.<
