Knowledge acquisition or requirements analysis?

There are many parallels which can be drawn between the processes of requirements analysis and knowledge acquisition: both are communication-intensive, both involve studying procedures and rationalising the findings for use within a computer-based system, and so on. Practitioners in both spheres have recognised that these similarities exist. This paper discusses the techniques used in requirements analysis and knowledge acquisition and asks which of the techniques could be used within the other process. There are many different techniques to choose from, and it is not possible to review a large number of them. This paper therefore concentrates on the modelling activity required within knowledge acquisition and requirements analysis. Specifically, the use of the expertise model of the KADS method within requirements analysis, and the use of object-oriented analysis within knowledge acquisition are discussed.<
