The effect of temperature on starting and stabilization of compact fluorescent systems

The relative performances of different compact fluorescent lamp (CF) systems were evaluated throughout a wide range of ambient temperatures applicable to both indoor and outdoor operation in North America. One test condition involved frost on all exposed surfaces. Considerable differences in stabilization times and starting times were observed, especially at the coldest temperatures. Recommendations were provided for purchasers, manufacturers, distributors, and standards bodies to help ensure the successful application of CF products. The results suggest that one should not assume that CF products will always deliver comparable illumination as incandescent products of the same lumen value. Performance depends considerably upon ambient temperature and the effect of temperature varies greatly between different CF products.<
