After CAD: Automatic design: dream or reality?

In mechanical design, current CAD systems can only perform two kinds of tasks: calculation of the performance of already designed elements, and final drafting of assembly and detail drawings prior to manufacturing and filing. The creative tasks remain the exclusive domain of man. A new concept, called synthetic intelligence, seems to be able to do creative tasks. An example is given. The first commercially available truly generative process planner (KRONOS) does perform such work. KRONOS, composed of a part editor, a technological preprocessor, a logic module, and a technological module, is described.<
