South Texas Project Control Room

The control panels of the South Texas Project (STP) were evaluated and upgraded using the guidelines found in NUREG-0700 (US Nuclear Regulatory Commission control-room design guidelines). The Control Room Design Review (CRDR) was performed during the latter stages of construction of the plant. The review, part of a program instituted in response to NUREG-0700, was conducted to determine (prior to manufacture) whether good human-factors design was evident in the control panels. Early discovery of poor design would minimize negative transfer and retraining problems. To facilitate the review, project management authorized the construction of a full-scale realistic mock-up and provided facilities for an extensive review by human-factors and systems specialists.
