Parametric effects on the induced voltages on overhead lines by lightning strokes to nearby ground

The effects of various line and lightning parameters on the severity of induced voltage by an indirect lightning stroke (e.g., stroke to a nearby ground) are discussed. The effects of the current waveshape and of the propagation velocity of the return stroke appear to be significant. The induced voltage is characterized by a high rate of change with time and by polarity reversal for a nearby stroke to ground. It is noted that such a characteristic may endanger the dielectric system of reactors and transformers connected to an overhead line.<
