Towards distributed control systems for experiments under microgravity

Experimental control systems for microgravity research have been developed, based on a control concept that relies heavily on software for its functions: data acquisition, actuator control, data storage, experimental scenario execution, and communication with a personal computer (PC) system for test and checkout. A second-generation system is being developed with provisions for distributed control. Interfacing through data communication results in improved modularity, improved subsystem testability and simplified interfacing. Single-chip microcontrollers and the same software-based control concept are the core of smart experimental subsystems that will perform distributed control functions in a complex environment facility. A facility controller unit allows operator interaction with a computer connected to the facility and its subsystems.<
