Wireless networking requirements of multimedia applications

The author addresses the key issues in designing a wireless network that can flexibly and efficiently support multimedia applications. Since multimedia applications constitute the most general class of applications, they also have the most diverse traffic characteristics and communications requirements. The author presents a framework for characterizing multimedia applications and their communications requirements. Also, packet switching has been known to be the most appropriate switching and multiplexing methodology for supporting multimedia applications. Therefore, the resource allocation schemes of packet switched wireless networks are explored. Finally, the author identifies three networking services that are necessary and sufficient for supporting multimedia applications.<
