High-frequency dielectric characteristics of surge attenuating semiconductive cable compounds

A novel model for the propagation of surges in solid dielectric transmission and distribution cables has recently been developed. The theory accurately predicts the relatively large high-frequency attenuation of such cable systems, which results from the displacement current passing through the semiconductive cable shields. A brief description of this theory provides the basis for describing the properties of a semiconducting material optimized for surge attenuation. The high-frequency dielectric characteristics of a range of commercial and experimental semiconductive materials are presented to illustrate the large variability of the high-frequency conductivity and permittivity observed in semiconductive materials based on conductive fillers.<
