Approximate modelling of head-antenna interactions using spherical wave expansions

Existing and proposed personal communications systems use small handsets equipped with simple antennas which are placed close to the user's head. The proximity of the head, and usually to a lesser extent the body, will obviously have a large effect on the azimuth coverage pattern of the antenna. A computer model of such effects would be of great assistance in designing the handset antennas in a systematic way. The paper describes an attempt to develop simple, fast-running software based on a homogeneous head model with an equivalent mean permittivity.<
