Reverse engineering 'a new definition for the nineties'

Reverse engineering defines a method where rapidly made copies of complex surfaces can be generated using noncontact optical and direct surface contact system probes. With the development of 3D CAD modeling, 3D digitizing, and rapid prototyping, the application of optical scanning using laser and Moire pattern techniques has hastened the market of reverse engineering. 3D modeling digitalization, a 3D videolaser system, 3D digitizing applications, and CAD/CAM compatibility are considered. Dimensional checks of complex parts and shapes and real-time fabrication of 3D parts with tolerance accuracies in the 0.7-1 mil range are achievable at costs that were not available with previous techniques.<
