Telecom glen-online to the world

The Highlands and Islands of Scotland represent about one-sixth of the land mass of Britain, but are inhabited by less than 1% of the British population. Industry struggles but the introduction of a modern telecommunications infrastructure is helping to revitalise the economy. The area is at present the only European rural area to have a supply-led advanced telecoms network, up to full ISDN standards. Advantages and implementation of the system are also described.<
