The planning of expanding PMR services into a reduced spectrum

In the mobile radio field, industries have approximately 45000 mobiles and some 2500 base stations. In 1979 the World Administrative Radio Conference (WARC) amended the International Frequency Allocation Table to extend the VHF broadcasting band. As a result the JRC, along with many other organisations, found that its mobile radio spectrum was to be re-allocated. The challenge this presented, the selection of a way forward and the steps necessary to achieve the transition to a new band are considered in this paper.<
