Ultrasonic transducer research at Strathclyde University

The theoretical characterisation, design and evaluation of ultrasonic transducer systems have formed a major activity at Strathclyde University in 1980s. Over this period, substantial government and industrial funding has been awarded to a specialist ultrasonics research group for the study of piezoceramic transducer signal generation and analysis when applied to sonar, non-destructive testing (NDT) and biomedical systems. The following aspects of transducer research are discussed and evaluated: theoretical modelling and behavioural prediction of single element transducers and multi-element arrays; composite transducers and arrays for sonar imaging, airborne ultrasound and NDT of porous materials; linear and circular monolithic phased arrays for monitoring and flaw characterisation in NDT; intelligent sensors for improved NDT; and ultrasonic arrays for remote cavitation cleaning.<
