M1 tank combat resilience

The author describes combat resilience, defined as a characteristic of combat vehicle design which permits rapid diagnosis of damage or failure followed by rapid expedient field repair. While full performance is desirable, only meeting the minimum functional combat capability (MFCC) is required. The MFCC criteria may be waived for recovery or if the tactical situation demands otherwise. The concept of combat resilience includes: battle damage assessment and repair (BDAR), redundancy/alternative mode of operation, built-in test/failure mitigation, and prognostics.<
