Women in engineering: planning and persistence pay off

An overview of the University of Dayton's Women in Engineering (WIE) program is presented, and factors that have helped to make the WIE program successful are pointed out. The program is described, a major 15-year study of this program is reported. The conclusions that are drawn from the data in the 15-year study are that the WIE program is effective in encouraging enrollment of women in engineering studies; that persistence of effort and continuity of staffing pay off handsomely in program success; and that the program, combined with a supportive atmosphere in the students' home and school lives, exerts a strong positive influence on their choice of engineering or science as a career.<
