Imaging absorption of infra-red light in the brain

The task of reconstructing an image from the intensity of the transmitted light detected on the surface of the body is quite formidable because the photons undergo very many scattering events such that the overall model of their propagation is best described as a diffusion process. Recently it has become popular to use very short (<20 picosecond) pulses as input sources and measure the transmitted light as a function of time and space. The present authors show that using such time-of-flight information adds considerably to the theoretical resolution of the resulting images.<
