RCS of resonant scatterers with attached wires

It is demonstrated that a wire antenna has a dominant effect on the RCS (radar cross section) of a strip scatterer or a cylinder scatterer for end-on incidence. The wire introduces resonance peaks into the RCS at frequencies making the wire length odd multiples of the quarter-wavelength. The wire dominates the RCS for end-on incidence. For broadside incidence the wire has a major effect on the RCS in the lower part of the frequency band studied, but in the upper part of the band the strip or cylinder itself has a scattered field larger than that due to the wire, and so the wire has little effect. The results shown here are directly applicable to the RCS expected of an aircraft carrying wire antennas.<
