Computer model of ANP-hemodynamic interactions

A mathematical model of ANP (atrial natriuretic peptide)-cardiovascular interactions was developed based on the Guytonian concepts of cardiac output control and data from the literature concerning ANP functioning. The model was used in a series of computer simulation studies to explore the possible mechanisms of acute hemodynamic control by ANP (a potent in vitro vasodilator). These studies provide insight into the paradoxical increase of total peripheral resistance by ANP seen experimentally in intact animals and suggest a more important role for ANP in the control of pulmonary hemodynamics. The usefulness of computer simulation studies in the development of hypotheses concerning dynamic physiological mechanisms is demonstrated.<
