Tilted beam formation by an array composed of strip inverted F antennas with a finite-sized EBG reflector

This paper presents an array composed of four SIFAs (strip inverted F antennas) located above a finite-sized square EBG reflector consisting of N/sup 2/ mushroom-like patch elements. Analysis reveals that, when a voltage source is applied to terminal F/sub -x/ and the remaining terminals (F/sub +x/, F/sub +y/, F/sub -y/) are left open-circuited, the EBG-SIFA array radiates a beam tilted in the negative x-direction. It is also revealed that the HPBW (half-power beam width) is a function of the number of patches N/sup 2/. As N/sup 2/ increases, the HPBW becomes narrower. Further investigation shows that the EBG-SIFA has a 4.2% bandwidth for a VSAVR = 2 criterion.
