New legal code [software patents]

Software is math and pure mathematics is supposed to be unpatentable, making every software patent issued a legal contradiction. This paper explores the current economic consequences of having a contradiction enshrined in U.S. intellectual property law and propose that instead of software patents, we rely on another, already existing method that can protect innovators from exploitation: copyright. As opposed to the case with patenting, independent invention is a valid defense against claims of copyright infringement. This paper discusses whether we ditch software patents for copyrights. Copyright provides protection from the sort of shady dealings that fair laws should prevent.
