A domain analysis of air traffic management

A discussion is given on the design of interactive planning support for air traffic management. Developing such support must, at the very least, take account of the controller's traditional planning tool-the flight progress strip. Indeed, consideration of development policies of evolutionary change and greater automation suggests the need for an explicitly formulation of the design problem entailed by the use of flight progress strips for planning. The article reports research which aims to produce such a formulation. Specifically, it presents an analytic characterisation of the domain of air traffic management and illustrates the reconsideration of the flight progress strip facilitated by that characterisation.<
