GPS and radio tracking of end-of-life products [recycling and waste disposal applications]

The fate of products after they are collected for recycling or disposal is not always well documented. We propose the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) locators and VHF radio-tracking systems to track end-of-life products from curbside collection to final destinations for recycling or disposal. We discuss the physical potential and limitations of GPS and radio in recycling collection and management. This approach could be used to track a variety of products in a range of situations. Limitations include battery lifetimes, potential interference with signal transmission and reception, environmental conditions, and the size and cost of the systems.
