Numerical simulation of electric field distribution in cable terminations

Cable joints and terminations represent the weakest components of a HV cable power line because of the electric field enhancement at the edge of the truncated conductors and dielectrics. This paper deals with the distribution of the electric field in a cable termination. A numerical model is devised by solving Maxwell equations using the Galerkin method. The influence of the material properties of insulation and the stress control tube are discussed. A comparison of the electric field distribution in the case with control tube and without control tube is presented. A capacitive distribution of the field is considered for materials of constant permittivity and for materials with nonlinear permittivity.
