Quench dynamic characteristics in an epoxy impregnated superconducting magnet

The quenched dynamic characteristics in an epoxy impregnated superconducting magnet were investigated in both experimental and simulation studies. The quench is induced by a ring heater located inside of the magnet midplane. The longitudinal and transverse propagation velocity calculations, using conventional formulas, enable one to simulate the quench phenomena two-dimensionally. Good agreement is obtained between simulated and experimental results. By separating the resistive voltage components from the simulated voltage tap signals, it is possible to calculate the transverse quench propagation velocity, which agrees with calculated results. The average transverse propagation velocity is 0.74 (m/s), which agrees fairly well with previous calculated results.<
