An optimization technique for the design of multi-frequency radomes

An unconstrained least-squares optimization technique, first developed by Heavens and Liddel (1968) is used for the automatic synthesis of radome walls suitable for multifrequency radomes of complex shape. The utility of this optimization technique is illustrated by the design of radomes suitable for the 20/30 GHz commercial satellite communications band. Radomes suitable for both ground-based and airborne terminals with incidence angles of up to 70 degrees considered. The large 3500 MHz bandwidth of each frequency channel combined with the 70 degrees incidence angle requirement makes this a formidable problem for the radome designer; such radomes would be difficult to design through previously proposed methods.<
