The author describes the relation between standards for professional applications and consumer applications and discusses the pace of change. He also discusses the activities of CMTT in presenting the broadcaster's requirements such as quality objectives, video coding, bit rates, network bit-error characteristics and BISDN based on ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) transmissions.<
