Laser-guided loading system

This paper describes how a large pulp and paper company reduced roll damage in loading newsprint rolls in ocean-going vessels. These newsprint rolls are manufactured in Longview, WA. After the rolls are made, they are stored in a warehouse in an upright position. All rolls are handled by lifting from the top with a vacuum platen. To accurately position cargo in the hold, a method was devised, using lasers to give the operators an indication of a predefined distance away from the bottom or to the bulkhead.
