Matched filters for identifying failed fuel rods in nuclear reactors

Matched filters are designed for an automatic identification of failed rods in fuel assemblies, which are tested using an ultrasonic pulse-echo method. The detection technique is based on processing echoes from the continuous emitted ultrasonic pulses. All of the failed rods are correctly identified, with a false alarm probability smaller than 3%. Comparisons with other methods are also performed.
