Comparative Analysis of Ripple-Based Passive Islanding Detection Techniques for Single-Phase Micro-Grid System

Looking towards the current power scenario, it is observed that the use of distributed generation (DG) is spread widely. Micro-grid consists of the number of DG unit located at distribution site and in present days most of them uses nonconventional energy sources. But the problem which has to solve while using DG with utility is unintentional islanding as it is hazardous to power system equipment and workers life. In this paper comparative analysis of rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) ripple and voltage ripple based passive islanding detection method (IDM) has been done for single-phase utility connected micro-grid system. The proposed methods are verified under a wide range of operating condition of islanding and nonislanding in MATLAB/SIMULINK software. Both the proposed techniques are accurate, and overcome the limitations of conventional passive islanding method. The proposed methods are also capable of distinguishing islanding and non-islanding condition. The voltage ripple based passive IDM is faster than ROCOF ripple based IDM and other conventional methods.
