Status report on the development of large bore flashlamps for the National Ignition Facility

Summary form only given. We present the results of lifetime and performance measurements made on 4.3 cm bore, 180-cm arc length flashlamps of the size and type we expect to use in the NIF. These flashlamps had 2.5-mm-thick cerium-doped quartz envelopes, electrically insulated bases for mounting, and cathodes doped with low work-function materials to reduce sputtering. We review the results of radiant efficiency and relative Nd-pumping efficiency measurements made with 360- and 500-/spl mu/m pulse lengths and with pulse energies up to 30% of the single-shot explosion energy.
