An Eight-Port 5G/WLAN MIMO Antenna Array with Hexa-Band Operation for Mobile Handsets

This paper presents a novel Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna design composed of a 6×6 5G MIMO antenna array in the LTE bands 42/43 (3400-3600/3600-3800 MHz) and a 2×2 MIMO WLAN antenna array in the 2.4 GHz (2400-2484 MHz), 5.2 GHz (5150-5350 MHz), and 5.8 GHz (5725-5875 MHz) bands for mobile handsets. Printed planar inverted-F antennas (PIFA) is used as the 5G antenna element (with a size of 3 mm×11.6 mm), while multi-branch monopole is adopted to design the WLAN antenna (with a size of 10 mm×10 mm). Furthermore, the WLAN antenna covers a Chinese 5G band (4800-5000 MHz) as well. Results demonstrate that the proposed MIMO antenna array has good characteristics of impedance matching and correlation coefficients in the desired bands of interest. Detailed design considerations of the proposed antenna are described in this paper. The corresponding simulated results are also presented and discussed.
