As illustrated in the first two chapters, computation does its work by manipulating representations, which are symbols or signs that stand for meaningful things. We have seen how Hansel and Gretel employed pebbles as representations for locations in support of their way-finding algorithm. For that the pebbles had to fulfill a number of requirements that we took for granted.
