Conclusions and Future Research

This conclusion presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the previous chapters of this book. The book introduces the properties of oil‐paper insulation systems used in transformers. A comprehensive discussion on the ageing of oil‐paper insulation systems has been provided, in the context of transformer operating conditions. For better understanding, thermal, oxidative, and hydrolytic ageing effects on insulation materials are discussed, to relate these ageing effects to transformer condition monitoring methodologies. The book provides a foundation for understanding a number of chemical and electrical‐based diagnostics, and also helps the reader to relate the diagnosis with the cause of insulation ageing. Among the chemical‐based techniques, dissolved gas analysis (DGA), furan analysis, and degree of polymerization (DP) are the most commonly used diagnosis techniques. Time domain dielectric response diagnosis techniques, which include polarization‐depolarization current (PDC) and recovery voltage measurements (RVM), are explained from theoretical to practical points of view.
