Scaling: Can Sustainability Scale?

In this chapter, we confront a challenging topic: How can sustainability performance be maintained when scaling operations? In other words, can the sustainability strategy of a company succeed if the company shrinks in size, grows, or is absorbed by a bigger organization, and the governance and ownership of the firm changes? Traditional organizations pursue growth in order to achieve greater economies of scale and increase profitability—their primary focus.
