Model-based torque controller for dynamical engine test stands

Dynamical engine test stands are an advanced tool for the development of internal combustion engines (ICE). As hardware-in-the-loop simulators, they combine the flexibility of software simulations with the reliability of measurements. Test stand performance and accuracy of the simulation depend on the performance of the test stand's torque control. This paper presents a new model based control approach. The mechanical model of the test stand is used for inertia compensation. The crank angle synchronous moving average (CASMA) filtering designed according to the known signal characteristics of ICE estimates the required speed and acceleration signals. The combination of the mechanical model and CASMA filtering leads to an improved overall dynamical control performance.
