Flexible wideband services to the residence: service architectures to meet customer demand

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) technology offers capabilities that can provide access to flexible wideband services, while using the large installed base of copper loops. The market for these services and the status of ADSL standards work are discussed; and some alternatives for ADSL protocols, focusing on OSI layer 2, are considered and compared.
