Observation of intrinsic mode splitting in a standalone micromechanical resonator

We report the first observation of mode splitting in a standalone microelectromechanical resonator resulting from the coupling from a mechanical mode to intrinsic localized modes. The demonstration of this coupling mechanism in a microstructure finds its relevance in both fundamental studies including explorations of phonodynamics and applications exploiting energy localization or delocalization by exquisite engineering of localized modes.
