Green Devices and Hardware

Electronic devices have become ubiquitous and are an intrinsic part of many aspects of our lives. While these devices provide the convenience of faster and better access to people, information and services, there is also a flip side. They have a negative impact on available resources and our environment. With the threat of global warming looming large, prudent use of these devices becomes urgent. Awareness of the impact of usage patterns and ways to minimize the impact is the first step towards a more sustainable practice.

In this chapter we explore the impact of these devices on the environment at every stage of its existence. The chapter focuses primarily on hardware devices. We examine the process of manufacturing in an attempt to identify best practices. Further, we explore the resource usage pattern in bringing the product to market. We also look at the usage patterns and adoption of environmentally friendly practices. We are not attempting to answer all questions in this regard, but rather suggest possibilities and more importantly, make the reader sensitive to the issues.
