Modified Lyapunov control law for torsional vibration suppression using laminated PVDF actuators

This paper presents a development of active vibration control strategies for a flexible thin-walled tube in pure torsion. Distributed PVDF film actuators and a modified Lyapunov controller have been employed to provide the optimal control force. The modal loss factor of the system has been evaluated theoretically and was employed to generate a series of vibration displacement amplitudes for predicting controller performance. A vibration experiment was performed on a flexible torsional cantilevered steel beam using PVDF film actuators. The experimental results agree very closely with the theoretical predictions, and demonstrate the viability of implementing this controller in practice.
