A high energy radon transform gamma-ray imaging system (REVEAL)

A compact, gamma-ray imaging system based upon the Radon Transform Imaging technique is presented in this paper along with a reconstructed image of a test scene. This instrument is able to produce images which highlight areas of radioactive contamination within a large field of view (/spl plusmn/45/spl deg/) using data obtained by scanning the scene with a finely collimated, CsI(Tl)-photodiode detector. A detailed knowledge of the detector's response-function and movement is then used to apply the maximum entropy image reconstruction technique. The instrument has been designed to operate over the energy range of 100 keV through to 662 keV and provides a simple, economical method for generating images in highly active environments using a compact detector.
