The Intranet as a knowledge enabler towards a KM strategy in a South African organisation

Organisations are eager to optimise their internal information technology (IT) resources to create, identify, collect, adapt, organise, apply and share knowledge to support a knowledge management (KM) strategy. IT plays an important role in supporting organisational knowledge processes. The question arises whether a selected organisation's existing Intranet can be viewed as an enabler towards its KM strategy. From a practitioner-based enquiry perspective, this question is explored by selection of a large organisation (eThekwini Municipality in South Africa) as the research setting. Derived from a mixed-methods research approach, the results of a survey of eThekwini Municipality's Intranet are presented and some management pointers are suggested towards its KM strategy.
