The effect of magnetic layer thickness on the digital recording performance of metal particulate tape

Computer simulations and experiments are performed to investigate the effect of thin magnetic layer on digital recording performance. Simulated magnetic recording patterns allow us to consider the magnetic recording mechanism and the cause of changes in output signal. The modulation noise, the signal-to-noise ratio, and the overwrite performance are investigated experimentally. A 0.4 dB higher SNR for the DDSIII format is confirmed. It is shown that the only disadvantage of the thin magnetic layer is a decrease in the long wavelength signal.
