Cross-layer QOS architecture for 4G heterogeneous network services

The limited ability of conceptual layers to exploit the nature of mobile communications has led to cross-layer solutions that allow optimal operations for heterogeneous wireless network services. This study proposes a cross-layer-based Quality-of-Service (QoS) architecture that includes the QoS engine and the cross-layer algorithm. The QoS engine is composed of the QoS daemon, QoS agent and control module to guarantee high-quality wireless multimedia services in 4G heterogeneous environment; the cross-layer QoS algorithm monitors and adjusts network resources periodically. Simulation results indicate that the average packet loss and average latency are lower by about 8.5% and 2%, respectively, than those achieved without the cross-layer architecture, while the throughput is slightly lower.
