Managing and supporting complex data networks

A communications network is expensive by nature, because it is service intensive and encompasses high-tech complexity. Over time, the total cost of operating a network can prove to be the costliest portion of a computing infrastructure. But, with special attention to certain aspects of network management and operations, the costs can be converted from an expense to an asset. A network strategy defines the goals that are to be achieved by the investment in a communications network. It must define the scope of services to be offered and how to attain them. The strategy should determine the integration level of all electronic communications services (data, voice, imaging, sensing) and focus on the services to be addressed while considering the limiting factors. A strategy combined with short and long term plans will ensure that the organization can take advantage of growth opportunities as they arise. This paper discusses some aspects of network management that have contributed to a successful network implementation. It is a network that consists of over 2500 computers residing in a three-building campus, supporting engineering, manufacturing and administrative functions. It also provides worldwide connectivity by means of a corporate wide area network, to over 95,000 other computer systems.<
