Feasibility of digital carrier in the rural telephone network

The feasibility of using digital carrier systems to upgrade the rural telephone service to the level of the urban service is investigated. Two types of systems are considered: point-to-point and one-point-to-many-point systems. It is shown that upgrading by plowing in new cable is more economical than either of these approaches.<
