From general Finite Element simulation software to engineering-focused software

Dedicated tools are often preferred by device designers because they fit their every day's needs and use the specific technical vocabulary, with a low level of complexity. Considering a general simulation software with its command language, our goal was to find out a development process to transform this general software into a dedicated tool, easily maintainable, reusable and extensible. Our approach is based on a UML (unified modeling language) description of the dedicated tool and its implementation in the command language of the general software. This article illustrates our method with the example of a dedicated tool we developed for the preprocessing of brushless permanent magnet (BPM) motors.
